Bozak
Bozak is a San Francisco Based DJ/ producer and RedBull Music Academy alum originating from Champaign, Illinois. The son of a drummer and a vocalist, he began sharpening his musical chops early with Suzuki Method violin as part of the his kindergarten curriculum. He then spent the following 11 years in front of a piano working his way through classical training. Brought up in a household where artists as diverse as Parliament, Silver Apples, and Tomita were played during dinner, his course in music was set as he became mesmerized how artists such as EPMD, NWA, and Gang Starr were sampling his former dinner-time soundtrack and putting those familiar sounds into a fresh new context.
The passion for music didn’t let up. Scholastic pursuits took a backseat in high school to his self taught education in Hip-Hop, House and the precursor genre’s like Disco and Funk that led to them. Once high school ended, Bozak purchased his first DJ setup and feverishly dug in crates to amass his record collection, later topping 10,000 pieces. He built up the skill set to enter and win regional DJ battles. Radio came shortly after when he started the “Needledrops” radio show with the goal of presenting Indie Hip-Hop alongside healthy doses of original sample sources and heavy down tempo beats. The show had many influential guests including RJD2, Atmosphere, Dilated Peoples, Qbert, & Mixmaster Mike. As the shows influence rose offers to DJ began to come in. Bozak’s brand of technically assembled genre-skipping mixing was immediately embraced and one weekly residency turned into six weekly residencies over the next few years while he was attending the University of Illinois.
Not long after completing his degree, he was given the exemplar honor and distinction of being selected out of the 4,000+ applicants to participate in the Melbourne edition of the Redbull Music Academy and one out of only five Americans to attend that year (the other yanks included Flying Lotus, Aloe Blacc, & Oddisee). It was at the RBMA that he was pushed to take his music productions more seriously. Returning from Melbourne, Bozak made the decision to make the move to San Francisco to put himself in an environment that would aid in the fostering of his own music productions and is currently prepping a number of releases to bless our ears shortly.
