Kissey Asplund
This swedish vocalist is born in the beginning of the 80s, 1982 to be correct. Living in Malmoe and Funkadelicville she records/writes and exists with her music. Childhood influences? Take a Scandinavian Beatles-Rolling Stones-ELO father, add a Caribbean disco-Donna Summer mother and top it off with a radio-listening kid.
She started to play piano at a young age and with the years she became more and more involved, singing in choirs and playing other instruments. In her late teens she decided to stop with music totally, she wasn’t at all pleased with her “sound” and the youthfulness in her voice. So she aimed for a career within fine arts and design.

Bozak
Bozak is a San Francisco Based DJ/ producer and RedBull Music Academy alum originating from Champaign, Illinois. The son of a drummer and a vocalist, he began sharpening his musical chops early with Suzuki Method violin as part of the his kindergarten curriculum. He then spent the following 11 years in front of a piano working his way through classical training. Brought up in a household where artists as diverse as Parliament, Silver Apples, and Tomita were played during dinner, his course in music was set as he became mesmerized how artists such as EPMD, NWA, and Gang Starr were sampling his former dinner-time soundtrack and putting those familiar sounds into a fresh new context.
The passion for music didn’t let up. Scholastic pursuits took a backseat in high school to his self taught education in Hip-Hop, House and the precursor genre’s like Disco and Funk that led to them. Once high school ended, Bozak purchased his first DJ setup and feverishly dug in crates to amass his record collection, later topping 10,000 pieces. He built up the skill set to enter and win regional DJ battles. Radio came shortly after when he started the “Needledrops” radio show with the goal of presenting Indie Hip-Hop alongside healthy doses of original sample sources and heavy down tempo beats. The show had many influential guests including RJD2, Atmosphere, Dilated Peoples, Qbert, & Mixmaster Mike. As the shows influence rose offers to DJ began to come in. Bozak’s brand of technically assembled genre-skipping mixing was immediately embraced and one weekly residency turned into six weekly residencies over the next few years while he was attending the University of Illinois.
Not long after completing his degree, he was given the exemplar honor and distinction of being selected out of the 4,000+ applicants to participate in the Melbourne edition of the Redbull Music Academy and one out of only five Americans to attend that year (the other yanks included Flying Lotus, Aloe Blacc, & Oddisee). It was at the RBMA that he was pushed to take his music productions more seriously. Returning from Melbourne, Bozak made the decision to make the move to San Francisco to put himself in an environment that would aid in the fostering of his own music productions and is currently prepping a number of releases to bless our ears shortly.

Columbia Nights
Columbia Nights' new album In All Things is available on digital, CD, and vinyl formats.
Soultronic production crew Columbia Nights looks to the past while taking a giant step forward.
Drawing from soul, R&B, hip-hop, electronica, and jazz, musician/producer duo Columbia Nights has developed a fresh take on a timeless tradition. Hayling Price and John E Daise made their rounds in Philadelphia as bandmates in college, and since reconnecting in Washington D.C. they’ve joined forces to start a new chapter of their journey. After years of sustained creative dialogue, the pair has developed a sound rooted in balance; their work represents a synthesis of the analog and the digital, the bright and the dark, the warm and the wintry.
For their first EP Dawn | Dusk, they have partnered with vocalist Sarai Abdul-Malik, who met the pair midway through her studies at Howard University's Jazz Department. This offering serves as an introduction to a new creative force poised to add to the conversation.
After releasing their critically acclaimed debut Dawn | Dusk on Record Breakin' Music, Hayling Price and John E Daise invited their former bandmate Jason "BrotherSpanky" Edwards on board to help write their next chapter. Having developed their musical chemistry over years of collaboration, the trio has dug deeper to push Columbia Nights' sound to the next level. With their signature blend of analog dirt and digital magic, the collective is certain to leave listeners eager to join them on their next excursions.

This is the story of 1 filled with questions. these are the effects of the evil twenties & how they change a man 4ever. these are the days of 1 perplexed with the ecstasies & sadness of what life & love offers, the innocence it robs u of, & @ the same time rescues u. this is a conquest inside the many levels of humility &arrogance... many of men have faltered 4 the sake of pride & ego. this is a story of fact & fiction. this is the story of yesterday, 2day & 2morrow… Seymour Liberty is a complicated individual 2 say the least. In his never-ending search 4 the “meaning’ of things he’s found it not as easy as it seems. Falling & growing has never been so exhausting. & tho he feels himself growing, nothing seems 2 ease the sting of falling. Therefore he comes 2 the conclusion that the only way 2 find what he’s looking 4, may be 2 just disappear 4 a while from his common existence, thus becoming a “wanderer.” Hoping 2 discover a new insight on the meaning of life, & his purpose in it. What he finds in his search is that thru studying many religions & philosophies, that they only give a unique insight on their own search, leading him back 2 square 1, with a catch. He can no longer hide under an ignorant umbrella. The questions resurface, with the addition of new knowledge & experiences, & the constant reminders of what was & could’ve been. A vivid imagination he has, a gift & a curse. He’s a poet, an artist, so he records his explorations & the questions surrounding them in that form. In the midst of him walking around in the bottom of himself, he encounters a gypsy caravan. ironically enough, he’s invited in their circle, & meets a beautiful lady who’ll never reveal her name, but nonetheless laces him with some things 2 remember her by, physical & metaphysical, influencing him on how 2 walk the tight rope, that life may be, in part anyway, a “ balancing act” ….2 be continued…
Aaron Michael Frison is the author of this story, Coultrain is the medium, or if u like the voice, interpreting it. It all began with the “adventures of Seymour liberty” & continues with these 2 pieces and again continues with “the great escape”, intrigued?
Dali
Dali represents a special collaborative moment in time, captured in aural form, between Record Breakin’s own “lil’dave and vocalist Lisa Preston (aka LP).
Lil’dave is a Philadelphia-based audio tastemaker who has made a name for himself by exposing people to soulful music in all it’s forms. As a DJ, he can easily whip the most mainstream crowd into a frenzy, but he is at his best when he digs deep into his crates for funky grooves, broken boogie, and thumping bass.
When it comes to making music, lil’dave’s productions draw from his hiphop roots, as well as his love of house, afrobeat, uk garage, salsa, jazz, synthesizers, and soul. He has released music as lil’dave, Illvibe Collective, and under his electronic alias, Osage, for record labels such as Record Breakin’ Music, Soulspazm, BBE Records, Young Robots, Bastard Jazz, Luvbug, Exadoria and Swedish Brandy.
In his relationship with the Record Breakin’ Music label he wears many hats, such as recording artist, remixer, artist development advisor, and graphic designer. He has worked with and remixed a diverse range of artists such as Selah Sue, J Cole, RJD2’s Icebird project, Lady Alma Ryat, Apt One, Joy Jones, Captain Planet, John Robinson, Foremost Poets, Laura Mvula, and more.
Lisa Preston (aka LP) hails from New Zealand and is part of the extended Record Breakin’ family, through her collaborations with Sir Froderick and Dotmatic. She first came to the attention of Record Breakin through her collaboration with UK producer K15 and the release of their ep “A New Path”.
Known for her lush harmonies and love of layers, she has joined forces with producers from New Zealand and abroad to create a variety of timeless blends, each one laced with her unique style of soul. She has worked with producers K15, Jellphonic, Bluevibe Studio, Cy Tru, Weedy (40 Winks) , Onur Engin, Lord Jackson, Wehkah, Nigel One & Indigo Pyramid, ClassicBeatz, Benny Tones, Dotmatic, Sir Froderick and Paddy Fred, and has featured on tracks released through much respected labels Record Breakin’ Philadelphia, Wonderful Noise Japan, Tokyo Dawn Germany, 4Lux Netherlands, BBE UK and Laidback Belgium.

Dipolomew (Dip-ah-luh-myoo) and Stan Steam (Dip -n- Steam/DNS a.k.a. Do Not Sleep) are a duo who have set out to bring a new level of skill back to the game of MCing. A few years ago, when a group of MC's from the Midwest living in Atlanta found themselves in the same circles & spittin in the same cyphers, they decided to form Galaxy High, who eventually recorded the instant classic "Friday Night Sessions" album, produced by Illa. Dipolomew (a.k.a. Dip) and Stan Steam (a.k.a. General Hotspit), two veteran's of the mic, decided the chemistry of their voices on wax was undeniable. DNS was born.
Long before they ever became a duo, both were respected mc's in their own right. Steam hails from Indianapolis where he gained legendary status as a top-of-the-food-chain battle m.c., eventually expanding his rep as far south as Savannah, GA. Dip spent a childhood split between Hammond, IN and Chicago, IL, fifteen minutes away...and the uniqueness and personality born from that Big City/Small Hood upbringing is evident in his rhymes. With Steam it's evident that the bubbling underground scene in Nap-town helped him hone his skills seriously early on.
With their debut project as a duo, Do Not Sleep!! The hitting lyrical flow of tracks such as "GUM" (Grown Up Music) and there high energy hit "Man the Myth", DNS want to announce their arrival to the world. Welcome!
Deep Black Society
Emerging electronic music collective Deep Black Society fuses the rhythmic traditions of techno, garage and soulful house with found sounds and the profound ancestral memory carried in the djembe on their forthcoming Origins Part 1 EP. Buoyed by comparisons to Waajeed, Moodymann and Theo Parrish, the enigmatic collective readies their brilliant four-track debut. Furious percussion mingles with spacious, mystical soundscapes for the length of the extended play release. The combination elicits a progressive body of work that defies gravity in order to shuttle the listener between planes of existence at a pace that conjures the mighty surge of a soul clap and captures the heartbeat at the core of all living beings. One part mantra and one part charismatic trance, Origins Part 1 is a painstakingly crafted clinic in the percussive rudiments that inform the music of the African diaspora, from the brilliant samba schools of Brazil to the warehouse revival halls and low slung trunks that host the abiding 808 thump of Orleanian bounce and Detroit ghetto tech. Deep Black Society’s forthcoming debut is an electronic divination that summons a sound spirit to send forth a new, tonally pleasing, and profound musical experience from the luminous future to combat the darkness and subjacent vibrations that plague a fraught and often challenging present. This is Record Breakin’ Music.

Dotmatic
Dotmatic (also written dot.|maTic) is the best-known pseudonym of D.J. & music producer Jelani Carter. The only child born to Philly Soul producer Phil Hurtt and jazz/gospel soloist Ann Swain Clark, Matic was introduced to the music business world at a young age. "My earliest memory is probably when I was like.. 5 years old.." he recalls. "My parents were working on a project at Sigma Sound & I remember my dad making the engineer real mad by letting me run the tape machine. It was funny, cuz I kept messin’ up this punch they were trying to do, but they stuck wit me til’ I got it right." Matic's mother also kept him involved as well. She was the primary soloist & choir director for the Duke Ellington Orchestra's Sacred Concert series, and would take him on the road whenever she got the chance.
Seeing different cultures & being exposed to various types of music would have a profound influence on Matic's creativity, but it wasn’t until his high school & college years that he started building a real relationship with music. In 2001, he founded Kinesiis Productions, LLC - a Philadelphia, PA based DJ & Production Company that he still runs today. He got his first break appearing on WUSL FM's "Inner City" program in 2002, and over the years, he's seen success with events & performances at several high-profile venues in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Atlanta, Detroit, and Los Angeles. Along the way, Matic kept busy with deejaying, releasing beat cds via the web, and doing demo production work for other up-and-coming artists. It's a little known fact that around 2003, he provided the instrumental that would become the first ever track recorded by indie-rap darlings Tanya Morgan.
In 2004, Matic served as executive producer for Philly artist 3TEN's first mixtape "Disturbing Behavior", contributing 5 tracks. 3 and Matic have been best friends and business partners since meeting as actors in a youth theater company in 2000, and are currently receiving offers from several different major labels for the latest 3TEN project. 2004 also saw the release of "The P-Robe Syndrome" - a project produced in collaboration with Philly/Brooklyn MC Mental, designer Tywho? and artist Rah Crawford as a tribute to the late Paul Roberson.
In 2007, he released his first solo instrumental project, "The Zen Meditations EP" on his newly formed indie record label "4 Corners Music Group". Described as a very personal purging process, "Zen" received much attention among his peers, and is considered to be the album where Matic finally found his true sound as a producer.
In 2008, Matic was featured on the heralded "Beats & Rhymes" producer showcase alongside some of Philly's best & brightest talent in hip-hop. 2009 will unveil the release of the second Dotmatic instrumental album "citY". An EP, tentatively titled "The citY Suite" will be released on 7" vinyl as well as the album "citY" released digitally via Record Breakin' Music. In 2009, you'll be able to hear Dotmatic production on albums from Kanu, Black Ice, King V. and 3TEN, as well as many others.
Extra Medium
Buscrates 16-Bit Ensemble and Sam Champ came up together in Pittsburgh, PA, digging through the jazz and soul sections in the legendary Jerry's Records and then running home to sample and chop up their purchases in an effort to impress one another. This friendly competition continued after Sam relocated to Brooklyn in 2001. Buscrates now plays keys for boogie-funk group East Liberty Quarters (ELQ), regularly DJs in Pittsburgh, produced remixes for artists like Marc Mac, and is featured on the latest Bastard Jazz release, Tempo Dreams Volume 1. Sam has held down various DJ residencies in New York City, released a massively popular D'Angelo Live mixtape in conjunction with Okayplayer, and produced an unofficial remix album featuring D'Angelo (again), Erykah Badu, Usher, and others.
Buscrates and Sam formed Extra Medium to debut Rediscovered, a full-length album based on samples from a single jazz record. The tracks were compiled over the course of several years. The duo just recently enlisted some of their favorite vocalists to contribute to the project.

Record Breakin' Music presents Extra Medium (EPK)
Fatnice
Fatnice is multi talented to say the least. The avant garde MC, producer, singer, and writer grew up listening to tons of records and tapes from his aunts collections which were comprised primarily of soul and funk gems. A prolific house head, Fatnice became entrenched in the boombap sounds of hiphop via the roar of Melle Melle rhyming The Message in 1982. An avid writer of poetry Fatnice found it addicting being able to combine rhymes with beats to create music.
Born in Chicago and being in love with education, Fatnice traveled to Atlanta, GA, in 1992 in pursuit of higher learning at Clark Atlanta University. During his matriculation Fatnice continued to delve deep into the abyss of music via record collecting, checking out shows at the famous Funk Jazz Café, and battling MC’s around the Atlanta University Center. Although Fatnice had been performing since the age of 11, he would get a true taste of the stage upon landing in the City of Philadelphia in the fall of 98.
Fatnice found himself in Philadelphia, once again pursuing higher learning and rocking open mics on the campus of The University of Pennsylvania’s’ Veranda Room(The Gathering). Shortly after his arrival Fatnice linked with classmate Darin Tolliver (aka Gamez) and became a member of Philly juggernaut Prophets of Ghetto having the honor of opening up for the likes of Public Enemy and Dilated Peoples. Upon graduating from PENN in 2000, Fatnice’s decision to stay in Philly led him to a life of recording and traveling internationally with the now defunct Philadelphia based hiphop trio 84. Fatnice has had the humbling experience of working with greats such as DJ Cash Money, Bahamadia, Cee Knowledge of Digable Planets and a host of others.
Presently Fatnice, a true believer in the art of moving the crowd, still performs, records and writes as well as flexing his vocal talents under the alias Mojo Green. Along with his production partner Blaak the 9th Man, the two have created Welcome To Soulville where Fatnice releases material such as his project ‘It’s Nice To Meet You’.

Debut album Eargasms For Short-Sighted Post-Truth Era People coming out March 9, 2018
“N Train Express to Queens!”
Steam and bodies rush from the train as the doors part. Metal ships pass with the frequency of moments. Amelia sits still in the eye of the storm, yielding to the harp. The sound of petals falling counters the bustle of bodies in space. Breathtaking arpeggios bloom to a massive crescendo before one final flourish. Rosin dust billows at the final strike of the baton. Black clad bodies rise around her — a fortress of body heat and beaming faces swell against her back. The sea of people at their feet rise to meet them. The orchestra takes a bow.
“Ladies and gentleman, Sibelius Academy and the Juilliard Orchestra!”
The opera house rumbles. Niilo tugs at her hand. They lock eyes.
“Still up for coffee?,” he asks.
She nods, an exhausted yes.
He pulls a ticket from the lining of his jacket and balances it on the stand in front of her.
It reads JFK to HEL.
“Don’t think too long.”
The curtain labors to a close, swallowing light.
::
Beto swore he had the sauce. He reminded Amelia every chance he got. Whether it was inflating his resume or his age or letting off a drumroll to score her steps down the block. He always hit the crash dramatically when she got to the door of the bodega after work. He was annoying like that.
“America! America when you gon’ let me get your number?”
She groans, “Ah-MELI-ah. Say it with me. Ahhh—“
“Yeah whatever. You know I love you,” Beto responds
He taps out the spine of a Pete Rock beat on his crude set of buckets.
“I know you know this one!”
His body rises and lands on the ailing cymbal just as a nightstick comes down on his neck. Beto is snatched from his perch and ground into fine mince with the quickness.
“Every week a noise complaint. I told you last week what was going to happen if I had to come back here,” Officer Moriarty brays.
The block erupts. Dusk settles around the fray, framing bodies in a tangle of pastels that go to waste on violence. Amelia tries to pull Beto out but she is on her back in sinking sand. The sky so wide above them that they must be caught in the beauty god made for someplace else -- this isn’t paradise. Officers scatter Beto’s drums onto the blacktop like bird feed. The violent cadence -- all spinning tops and hubcaps -- roars to a fanfare before a truck tire milks one final statement from an irreparable bend in the metal. The guys on the block toss an adjacent cop car with bottles, bricks and anything else they can sharpen within seconds.
The donas stand with their hands on their hips. A mess of scarves and rollers and pins. Prepared for portraits, and war, and rapture. Unbound breasts dragging a peg-legged rhythm while their banter punches holes into the air trapped in the space between their homes -- an effervescent stream of conjecture peppered with scandal and gossip and invocations of god.
“Did somebody take a picture?”
“Dios mio! You are killing him! You want to kill him?”
Questions answered only by the crisp percussion of their brooms scrubbing the devils and chalk and dog shit from the asphalt. Picking up where Beto’s rhythm left off. Trying in vain to sweep the pigs away. Any hope of saving Beto drowned by the din of sirens and a swarm of neighbors yelling, “Black Lives Matter!”
Night engulfs Moriarty’s cruiser as it speeds away with Beto’s limp little body inside -- a broken wing. One of the OG’s scrapes Amelia from the sidewalk and stashes her on the steps of the building. He tears his shirt and wraps her hands with the fabric.
“Don’t worry mama, we got something for them when they come back”
Amelia doesn’t respond. The blood empties from her hands to leave a Rorshach pattern on the fabric. They both watch the lazy river as it moves, transfixed.
Beto’s mother screams.
Amelia recognizes the sound immediately. It is the note she had been trying to hit all week.
::
“Last call! Flight number 9842, JFK to Helsinki”
Niilo stands alone at the gate, looking out across the airport tarmac.
The gate attendant bellows into the PA in front of her.
“Sir! Are you on this flight? We are scheduled to depart in five minutes.”
::
A crit panel is seated in a small auditorium. Amelia’s harp is at the center of the room.
Her seat is empty.
::
Amelia approaches the gate, clutching her ticket. She is barefoot and completely spent. Niilo ignores the bandages on her hands. He kisses them both.
The gate attendant rolls her eyes and scans their tickets.
“Please take your seats immediately. We are about to depart.”
::
Verdant, idyllic and a million miles away from Myrtle Ave, the city is a neat arrangement of sharp angles, old world charm and the kind of warmth that makes you whole.
Amelia squints at the sun and takes a deep breath for the first time in days.
“All you need is a harp. No problem,” Niilo suggests. He toddles through chords neither of them love. They are rigid against the peace of morning. She looks down at her hands. He looks at her.
“So, about that coffee?”
::
Amelia steps from the curb. Footsteps rush like water against a deafening call to arms.
Bullhorns and anger and sirens pollute the air, suggesting the beauty she took for granted in Niilo’s rough chords. Amelia is the sore thumb in a sea of angry men with banners and swastikas and a million reasons why she does not belong. She is the dark spot they are eager to erase. The stain left after Beto’s death.
A hair’s length from the largest of them, she pivots to run. Riot police with batons and shields and spray canisters approach with dead eyes and little diplomacy. Niilo runs through them toward her. The density of their bodies drown him as he fights to save her from the approaching wave.
“Amelia!,” he screams
Weapons are trained at either side of her. With but a breath between them, she raises her arms.
All bandaged hands and that hard-earned Bucktown stone face.
“Don’t shoot!”
Her words counter the silence of onlookers and contrast Niilo’s screams.

I, Ced
"You have to find what works best for you. Some people got that It that is magical. Whatever thatIt is, you should use it and let it shine like the star that you are. It will take you far." -I, Ced
You may know I, Ced from his composition and production collaborations with artists like Coultrain and Black Spade. What you may not know is that I, Ced isn’t just a beatmaker, he carefully crafts each body of work with inspired sounds, samples and his own live instrumentation.
Born and raised in St. Louis, MO. currently based in Los Angeles, I, Ced is poised to take his musical pieces to the next level. Heavily influenced by the sounds of vinyl, piano, strings, James Brown, The Sugarhill Gang and gospel music, I, Ced has a wealth of musical inspiration to tap into at any given time. From an early age Ced was seen by his peers and teachers as a musical tastemaker and someone who was to pave the way for like-minded musical heads. In high school he quickly moved up the ranks from a saxophone and clarinet player in the band to musical director in the school theater. This was only the beginning musical possibility for I, Ced.
Naturally Ced's love of music gave him the opportunity to intern and work alongside some amazing projects and at R & B labels like LaFace and Hidden Beach. One thing lead to another and so came the opportunity to link with soulful vocalist Coultrain, long time friend, Blackspade and The “Love Meaning” 12” was released in 2008 on Ced’s own imprint, Move Next Music. Garnering much support and praise from music lovers, the blogosphere and publications worldwide these futuristic funky sounds Ced contributed to and created allowed a space for infinite possibilities. The musical chemistry between Ced and his collaborators is apparent in recordings and video making this next level music super palatable and undeniably drenched in love.

J1 aka THE DEER
R.I.P. J-1 (Javon Coleman) aka The Deer (March 5, 1979 - November 27, 2011)
Friends, Family and Fans, we have lost an incredible musician and all around good brother.
You were an amazing talented spirit and will be sorely missed.
Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and fans.
Rest in Power!
“I don’t have to be the center of attention, but I like to be a part of the action.”
As a drummer, producer, and DJ, J1 is not only just a part of the action; he’s usually creatingthe action.
From teaching himself how to play the drums in his hometown of Cleveland to linking up with some of the most progressive musicians on the funkscape of his adopted city of Los Angeles, J1 demonstrates himself dedicated, passionate, and, in his words, “straight to the point.”
While living in San Francisco, J1 visited L.A. and happened upon the now-legendary Do Over party, where he found himself surrounded by many of the very people, such as DJs House Shoes and Aloe Blacc, he respected most. That, combined with the Eden-like weather, sealed him, and he decided right then and there to move.
It proved to be a wise snap decision, indeed. In his three short years since relocating, J1 has become affiliated with Shafiq Husayn’s En’AFreeKa Ensemble as well as Animal Kingdom. He’s released several beat tapes and podcasts through Heavyweight Production House (HVW8), including “Attack of The Deer” and “The You Tube EP.” After a completely improvised Super Session at HVW8 Art + Design Gallery, Master Blazter, comprised of Computer Jay, Dam Funk, and J1, has grown to be one of the foremost bands on the funk/soul/boogie scene. Expect solo releases, as well as a break beat album, from J1 in the near future.
His artistic integrity and resolute work ethic account for much of his recent success. By applying that same approach to every collaborative venture, J1 helps artists realize their visions while staying true to himself and the funk. Quietly observant and keenly focused, he’s always at the eye of the storm of people having a good time.

Joy Jones
It is in the intensity of her eyes. It is in the burning story that lies in the crevices of a subtle smirk. It is what brings us JOY. She was born in East LA, raised by Caribbean-American parents and reared on good music and spicy food. As a child Joy was very in tune with the worlds...those within and those outside of her being. It is this strange osmosis that is refelcted in her work. Her travels, her meetings, her education and experiences all find their way to her creative palate. They show up in songs, in poems, in plays and in her artwork.
After attending Duke University where she studied biology and cultural anthropolgy, Joy moved to the United Kingdom. At the University of London she studied medical anthropology by day and the local art scene by night. While in Europe she performed in London and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. When Joy returned to LA she began work on her one-woman-show entitled, THE NAPPY GODDESS COMPLEX. It ran for 4 weeks at the Hudson Theater and received rave reviews. Joy also became a fixture on LA's underground spoken word/ soul movement. In addition to performing around the city, Joy has traveled from the West Coast of Africa to the West Coast of America, sharing her work in Cuba, Turkey and Swaziland among other places. She is currently a recipient of the 2002 California Arts Council Individual Artist In Residence Prograqm Grant, which allows her to conduct literary workshops with HIV positive individuals.
Recently Joy has reconnected with the London art scene to complete her debut CD with the legendary Bugz In The Attic Crew. Her highly anticipated album, GODCHILD is due out early 2009 and promises to be a journey into postmodern funk, surrealist soul and intergalactic grooves for the people.
Dj Junior
Some do it for the fame. Some do it for the money. But the very best selectors play music for the love of it. Take DJ Junior, one of Philadelphia’s premiere purveyors of indie hip-hop, house, rare grooves, broken beat and afrobeat.
“I’ve never wanted to be the center of attention,” explains Junior, who grew up on his Jamaican parents’ socca and reggae and began collecting hip-hop and soul records at age 15. “I’m just a fan of music; I love introducing listeners to artists from different genres that they might not get a chance to hear.”
Each Friday from 6 to 9 PM EST, Junior shares this passion for independent artistry on Eavesdrop, the radio show he co-hosts with Philly producer Lil’ Dave . The show, which is broadcast by Drexel University’s WKDU 91.7FM and airs on Junior’s web site, www.recordbreakin.com, features interviews with artists like King Britt, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Ursula Rucker, Dwele, Lizz Fields, Platnium Pied Pipers, Jazzanova, and tracks by hundreds of signed and unsigned musicians. By providing a platform for those outside of the commercial loop, Eavesdrop has attracted a worldwide following of thousands, including ?uestlove, Zap Mama, Benji B (BBC 1Xtra), Rich Medina and Foreign Exchange’s Nicolay and Phonte.
In 2007 Junior started Record Breakin' Music(RBM), a Philadelphia-based, boutique record label with a straightforward approach to releasing quality new music with a soulful foundation. RBM has already started on the right path with releasing two highly acclaimed compilations,Lend Me Your Ear and Excursions. In 2008 we initiated our limited edition 7” series. This series along with our full length albums and EP’s is how we will continue to introduce our contributions to the music community. "Our focus has and always will be to present quality music to a culture that embraces it."
But even as DJ Junior extends his reach, he remains focused on his original mission: to spread the good word on good music. “I’m very approachable,” says Junior. “ I don’t just play tracks and say, ‘Whoever gets it, gets it.’ That would be doing a disservice to the audience and the artists. My goal is to share. That’s why I write pieces about the artists who come on Eavesdrop, that’s why I post track lists on my site, and that’s why I archive everything I do. My goal isn’t to get a certain audience. It’s for everybody to hear quality music.”

M64 (Ragen Fykes + Ohmega Watts)
A new musical galaxy is born.
On a planet populated with average artists, so-so producers and lackluster vocalists, it is as rare as witnessing a shooting star to stumble upon substantive musicians who are fearless, enigmatic and willing to tread into the nebular to uncover beats and rhymes as vivid and depth-defying as the Milky Way.
Ragen Fykes never, ever wears matching socks, - "I don't want them to match. I want them to go together. Like boyfriend and girlfriend. Don't match your socks. It's a new epidemic." – she can't go a week without baking rice krispy treats for her and her 4 year-old son Malik and she could tell you what the latest look-book from any European fashion house has to offer. But these are just side hobbies. Fykes began flirting with the art of song as a child and if asked, will entertain you with colorful adolescent stories of composing lyrics using words from a kid encyclopedia. After an attempt to tackle the industry through avenues in Los Angeles, Fykes made the realization that she needed time for reflection and experience. "I was trying to be more self-aware and honest with myself about the things I wanted and needed in my life" she explained. Fykes then took a break from the business and put her energy into being a new mother.
It wasn't until two years ago that the optimistically spirited artist with a richly toned vocal warble that is part Etta James, part Erykah Badu and part Ragen Fykes ("I think I'm Dolly Parton meets Kool Moe Dee", she exudes) decided to take another stab at singing. She started slowly, becoming backup for a local band. It was after a show one night with the band that she met Watts, whom she had admired from afar for his beats. Watts was taken with her performance and invited her to become an integral part of his upcoming solo project, Watts Happening. Shortly after releasing, Watts Happening, Campbell decided to turn his attention to what was, at the time, a still undefined, untitled project with Fykes. It began simply as a three-song EP but as Watts and Fykes worked together, they both quickly realized that not only were they becoming good friends, but that they often had parallel thought patterns for tracks, which made working together feel like a natural process. "There is no one better I could work with", says Fykes of her teammate Watts. "I truly believe that working with Ohmega is a match made in heaven. He's like my brother and he's not interested in other things besides making music and inspiring people."
As a talented triple threat emcee, producer and deejay, Brooklyn-born and raised Milton Campbell, better known as Ohmega Watts, has been doing just that – making music and inspiring people – for well over a decade now, first with his three-man army crew, Lightheaded (along with emcees Braille and Othello) and more recently as a producer and solo artist (The Find, Watts Happening). Next to Fykes, who considers herself a green thumb in the game of music wheelings and dealings, Watts is a well-marinated, seasoned veteran and over the years, his pitch-perfect ear for unique melodies and layered, harmonizing riffs, chirps, old soul and world beat samples has only improved. Now residing in the NW and signed to Ubiquity Records, he has been working extensively with Fykes during the making of their full LP, to be tentatively titled, The M64 Collabo. When asked where the name for the collaboration came from, Ragen's face lights up. "The M64 Collabo is when Ohmega and I link together and we make music. It stands for Messar 64. It's also known as the Black Eye galaxy." Messar 64 was created when two other galaxies collided in space, causing the smaller, inner galaxy to spin clockwise. The gases from this galaxy in turn, make the larger, outer galaxy rotate counter-clockwise. Fykes discovered Messar 64 while at work one day, researching, "things that were spacey." Watts liked the sound of the shortened version and the two of them agreed that the name represented their creative collaborative efforts. Fykes explains, "We're two different people and although we rotate in two different ways, we are still unified as one. I call Ohmega the inner galaxy because the gases, or rather, the energy that he gives off helps me rotate and better understand my own process."
With the LP almost complete and special guest appearances still trickling in (Pigeon John, Theory Hazit and Don Will from Tanya Morgan for starters), the M64 duo is anxious and ready to hustle once the project is released. Fykes is sweetly cognizant of the enormity of pursuing music. "I'm excited that I'm doing something that's so risky, but I'm doing it," she says. "There are people who go along in life and there are people who take risks. The excitement is in taking this risk. I feel like I'm living life right now for something that I want to live for and I'm happy."

Mndsgn
Some where outside the city of "Brotherly Love" dwells the untapped vibrations of a freethinking instrumentalist by the moniker, Mindesign aka Mndsgn (or Mind for short).
Born in San Diego, California, Mind spent his early years submerged in musicianship.
"My uncle was a drummer and my pops played a little bit of guitar. I was real young at the time, so my memory's a bit fuzzy, but if there’s anything I can remember, it was always being in the garage playing with the drum set. I always had a thing for drums…something about the boom bap." After making the move to the east coast at the age of 6, he somewhat drifted away from that musical atmosphere, only to be reunited with it in his middle - high school years where he observed his older brother making beats with FruityLoops. Fully embracing the beat making culture, Mind stayed focused, diligently perfecting his craft. As time passed, it was becoming more apparent that his passion was destined for the world to appreciate. Drawing influences from a multitude of musical genres (classic rock, funk, soul, progressive jazz, electronic, & obvious hip hop producers), he strives to maintain purity in self-expression. Mind's pieces seem to embody an organic feel, taking you on a spiritual vacation through strong buildups and complex motifs. Equipped with cosmic textures & soulful harmonies, he invites you to open your ears, as well as your heart. "If there’s anything I’m looking to achieve through my music, it's reminding folks that Love is all you need."
RBM is extremely excited to reveal Mindesign's first solo release "Lights & Tunnels".

Particle Ray
Does it feel good? To understand this question is to get where Allec Johnson, Particle Ray, is coming from. It’s a question asked every time he works on a song or plays the next record for an audience. Once the music feels good people begin to listen to what you have to say.
Jersey born. Philly situated. Has a father who Djed and a mother with great musical taste. He was raised on a healthy diet of Prince, Teena Marie, Anita Baker, Kraftwerk, YMO, and early house, hip hop, and funk. P. Ray avoided his parents music like the plague until he heard The Chemical Brothers “Block Rockin’ Beats.” The dance music bug hit. In the summer of 1999 P. Ray began “making” music on the family PC and soon after asking the old man about how to spin some records. *His father mentions he would tell him different mixes to try when P. Ray could barely reach the turntables*
P. Ray’s DJing directly influences everything he creates. It aids in discovering connections between things most people won't see. He does this while keeping in mind: what is the narrative and does your body react before your brain has to tells you “it’s dope?” Does it feel good?

Soia
Singer and lyricist Soia loves her producer Mez’ beats. The two Viennese musicians first collaborated for their 2011 single 'Obtaining', which received love from blogs such as Moovmnt and BamaLoveSoul, and was featured on radio shows and mixes all over the world. Soia and Mez released their first album 'Mood Swings' on Philadelphia-based label 'Record Breakin’' in 2013.
Melancholic and gentle, then demanding and powerful, Soia’s vocals oscillate between Soul and Electronic Hip Hop, dancing effortlessly over the Dilla-esque beats and beautiful harmonization of Mez. The biotechnologist’s lyrics are engagingly weird - All sorts of creatures, real and imagined, land on her operating table and under her microscope: bipolar porcupines, intangible tigers, fractal spirits, roaming deer...
The half Israeli Mez has been producing for over ten years and is possessed by the search for the perfect sound. The Jazz pianist has produced for US rapper Raashan Ahmad, and even Redman has visited the Viennese studio to pick beats.
With the last 'Soia' album carrying a more Neo Soul sound and feel, the new material is oriented more towards world music samples, and contains Ethiopian, Kurdish and Jazz sample flakes. The sophomore LP will definitely be more upbeat, with deeper bass and stronger vocals.
The album 'H.I.O.P.' (an abbreviation of 'Hidden in Obvious Places') is to be released on October 2016 worldwide on the US label 'Record Breakin’'. Additionally, an exclusive release in Japan and Taiwan will be released by 'Sweet Soul Records' with two bouncy bonus tracks.

Spinnerty
Picture this: a Midwestern kid getting shuttled around to soccer practice in the back seat of his parent’s car listening to The Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen and Phil Collins - doesn't bring to mind a future jazz, soul, hip-hop head, now does it? But somehow, in the case of DJ Spinnerty, one musical vision led to the next.
Spinnerty found his start playing regularly in jazz bands from middle school through to college. “I loved the music,” Spinnerty says, “but sitting under fluorescent lights and playing tunes from sixty years ago seemed to be missing the point of the jazz movement historically. It didn’t have that element of revolution and the smoky club.”

Tone B. Nimble
Anthony Fields, aka Tone B. Nimble, has been a vital entity, on the music scene, for over 30 years. His calling started in the mid-1980’s as a DJ spinning House, Disco, and Electro in Chicago’s flourishing underground scene. With an open mind and ear, Tone branched out into hip-hop early in his career. Tone’s musical journey includes: Mixshow DJ (106 Jamz), several DJ residencies (Slick’s, Sinibar, Liquid Kitty and Danny’s), Music Buyer (Beat Parlor), National Recording Artist (TND/ Wild Pitch Records), and Label Owner/Recording Artist (All Natural). Though his career path has been wide-ranging, Tone’s primary focus is uncovering new sounds that inspire, uplift, and captivate listeners. As times and audiences have evolved Tone has chosen to give special attention to his first love; collecting soul-filled Disco records.
With minimal time devoted to the business-side of music, Tone turned his attention to “digging” and discovering new music. Concentrating on various styles of Disco, it’s the gospel sound that has seized his attention. “The uplifting message, unmatched energy, and sheer emotion displayed in these recordings showcase the spirit that I try to present when I DJ.” In 2011, Tone started Al-Tone Edits with partner Al Bumz, a disco edit label devoted to featuring lesser known Soul, Disco, and Gospel tunes. With support from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Detroit Swindle, Sadar Bahar, Hunee, and many others. Al-Tone Edits is regarded as a label for Disco savants. Nine volumes deep, Al-Tone Edits continues to grow in exposure, while opening doors for the duo. More recently Tone developed a following for “Soul Is My Salvation” a music series dedicated to dance and DJ friendly Gospel tunes. 30 years later, Tone continues to thirst for new music….

After gaining notoriety on the London underground scene Ty signed to Big Dada records in 2001, the same year his mighty debut album ‘Awkward’ was released. The union between the artist and label saw a further two albums - 2003’s Mercury-nominated ‘Upwards’ and ‘Closer’ (2006) - released over five years.
Since his fourth solo album, ‘Special Kind of Fool’, was released in 2010 via BBE records, Ty has featured and collaborated with many artists stretching from America to France. Ty is also known for his work as a spoken word artist. Earlier this year he was asked to perform and host workshops for the British Council, which culminated in the conclusion of a 35 year halt on international performers in the Sudanese town of Port Sudan. As well as this, his spoken word efforts have seen Ty put in performances at The Big Chill Festival and The Royal Albert Hall. Alongside his work with the British Council Ty is also a member of The HipHop Shakespeare Company, running workshops with young people, showing the influences and works of Shakespeare in today’s music scene.
Anthony Valadez
Anthony Valadez grew up in the bustling cultural hub of the San Fernando Valley, right outside of Los Angeles. Okay, maybe it wasn’t the most creative space for a young Latino to come of age, but the tenacious pre-teen had an insatiable curiousity since then and took it upon himself to find his calling. By junior high, young Anthony was tuning into KCRW where he was particularly drawn to a show where Michael Mixxin Moor was combining political speeches by the like of Malcolm X with acid jazz instrumentals.
Not long after this period, Anthony was able to procure some turntables and spent his spare time catching the bus from the SF Valley into the heart ofHollywood, searching for new musical worlds to get lost to in shops like Beat Nonstop andStreet Sounds on Melrose. This is also when visual arts began to really pique his interest. He’d often purchase records based on their cover art alone, sometimes being disappointed when he’d put the needle to its grooves then other times being blasted into yet another musical dimension.
DJing developed as a natural extension of this constant curiosity, never as a career plan. Still, through ardent dedication, by the time Anthony was still in high school he was ditching 6th period, going over to the local community college radio station to drop a set.
Even though most anyone else would have dropped school as an interest and focused on music as a path given his circumstances and opportunities, Anthony still saw his future in community work. “I thought I was going to be working with the community in the arts, that was my goal,” explains an older Anthony from the porch of his breezy Santa Monica apartment, “That was what I wanted to do and now I do that to volunteer. It all fell into place without any kind of intention.”

Vicelounge
Music: amalgamated noise. truth set to words and tones, spoken or sung, felt inside the melodies torn from yesterday or created for tomorrow.
Welcome family, this is the present!
Vicelounge is a place to find yourself or others nodding their heads and tapping their feet. Get up and do the proper two-step with the fine lass/lad from across the room. Take them and ride the drums or sit on the melody, this interconnection of hip-hop and soul-fried music.
Then there are the days when beautiful ambiance beckons you to sit and love another; gets you to focus on the important things. You think it through while we provide the soundscape. This is where you dance because you cannot stop yourself. Enjoy the company of others for 5 minutes: sweat and lose control; close your eyes and get into what moves you - sometimes organic; sometimes electronic.
Vicelounge refuses the boundaries and constrictions of genres. We make music that befits our moods and feelings. Crafting songs to turn a thought into conversation or welcome a love into new universe. This is why we play and sample and write and think art. and this is what we create... art.
I could tell you it is great art inspired by the masters of galaxies, but who am i to make such announcements. We only know it is heart-felt and honest.
Plus, what is music but a cultural exchange between maker and listener; a presentation of thoughts and philosophies with a person or group? we offer ourselves in song. You offer yourselves as listeners and enjoyers...even the critics have a place in our hearts.
Come. Enjoy the gift of pretty noise.
Take. Share. Enjoy. Repeat...
"The soundtrack for your stylish and dangerous lifestyle."
